Game publishers are the same as any publisher, they decide how many copies are created of a book or dvd or newspapers, this is the same with the games industry.
The publishers of a game industry will decide how everything looks with that being said this will be stuff like advertisements such as posters, adverts and magazine prints and layout of the game case, what the image looks like and how it is presented.

Console Manufacturers/First Party Publishers-
Console Manufacturers/First Party Publishers are the owners of consoles or software systems such as Xbox, Playstation and Sony.
These companies choose if they want a certain game to be published on there console/ system, the console manufacturers can take control of the game development to notify the game developers if they want they date they game comes out to be early or late, depending on marketing.
The main months for marketing and selling games is March and September

Distribution and Retail-

Distribution and retail is when the company sell there product and put it in shops across the world for it to be bought,they ship out the game from where it is mass produced.
the retail of it is how much it is sold.

Outsourcing Companies is when companies look else wear for a certain job category this can be for if a company don't have a art team, they will go outside of there company to source and get art work from a team of artist in a different company.

press and media is basically the people and companies who prioritize in presenting and advertising the game for the companies who have made the game, this can be anything from posters, trailers on tv which could be from the game or cinematic.
The press and media do this for money.
Companies who want there game to sell do more publiticty then mos games would do, this would be like Call of Duty, Destiny, Fifa and some times mobile apps like boom beach and clash of clans
